Steve Aoki @ ILLMORE – SXSW | Thursday Mar 14th
SXSW is known for booze, parties, and music. Whether you find yourself on the always crowded and notoriously crazy 6th street downtown or on the house party lined Rainey St, a good time and fun will always find you. From March 7th until March 14th Austin was the place to be. It was a great time and even a better time discovering the best of the best in music.
The man, the myth, the legend, Steve Aoki of Dim Mak Records also partied like the rest of us in Austin during this time. On Thursday March 13, he performed alongside Wiz Khaflia to a sold out crowd at the Austin Music Hall.
One would think that after this show it was one and done, but that is not true. Austin’s SXSW is known for it’s thrilling shows, but what its especially known for is its even crazier off the wall after parties. That night was no exception. THE ILLMORE was the after-party to be at following Aoki‘s midnight show. Past performances at this exclusive after party include the likes of Mackelmore, Diplo, Zedd, and Kendrick Lamar to name a few.
Usually playing to over 100,000k+ fans, the show at the Music Hall had an intimate feel. However the show at the ILLMORE had the feel of a downright underground – held at a skate rink and bowling alley, which was converted for the night to a music / club venue. Cake throws and rubber boats and all were present. The usual Aoki suspects including, A LIGHT THAT NEVER COMES, No Stopping Us (Steve Aoki Remix), Turbulence, Get Ready (Steve Aoki Edit), and more. Aoki again proved that he has the talent and ear to combine the sounds of house and electro with that of rap and rock and at both shows that night. It was a crazy, mad night that I was lucky enough to be a part of, especially at the “rage till dawn” after-party at the ILLMORE.
